Professional gotelé removal follows a fixed logic: assess and test the texture, protect the home, then either strip it or skim over it depending on what it is made of, repair the wall, sand with dust control, check under raking light, prime and paint. The test decides the method; the preparation and checking decide the quality. This guide explains each stage for owners comparing contractors, not as a do-it-yourself manual.
Why does a contractor test the wall before quoting?
Gotelé looks similar from one home to the next, but it is not all made the same way. Some textures were made with distemper, a water-based paint that tends to soften again when dampened. Others were made with plastic-based paints, and many have been painted over several times since, which seals the surface. The method that works on one will not work on the other.
A small test patch, usually somewhere discreet such as behind a door, shows how the texture behaves and how sound the plaster is underneath. A contractor who quotes the final job purely from photos is guessing. That is why we give a first estimate from photos but confirm the method after the visit. The test also reveals surprises, such as an older layer of wallpaper under the paint, that change the approach.
What has to be protected before work starts?
Gotelé removal is wet, dusty work, so the preparation of the room takes real time. Floors are covered with sheeting taped at the edges, and often with boards in walkways. Windows, frames, radiators and built-in furniture are masked. Switch plates and socket covers are removed and the openings protected, with power isolated where necessary. Furniture that stays is moved to the centre and wrapped.
In an apartment, protection extends beyond the front door: the route to the lift and the lift interior are covered so that the communal areas do not suffer. Under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal, owners must inform the community’s representative before altering elements or installations of their flat; even when the work is purely decorative, a short note to the administrator about dates and working hours avoids friction with neighbours.
What happens when the gotelé can be stripped?
Where the test shows that the texture softens, it is dampened in sections and lifted off the wall with scrapers, working methodically so the plaster beneath is not gouged. The damp scrapings are collected as the work progresses rather than left to dry and spread dust. Any areas that refuse to come away are dealt with locally.
Stripping rarely leaves a wall ready for paint. The plaster underneath often shows old repairs, uneven patches and marks left by the texture. For that reason, stripping is usually followed by a light skim or at least by thorough filling and sanding. A contractor who promises a perfect wall straight after scraping is underestimating the job.
What happens when the gotelé has to be covered?
When the texture is too hard to strip, the professional route is to skim over it. Loose or flaking areas are removed first and the surface is sealed so the new material bonds evenly. The texture is then filled and buried under a new finishing layer that is built up until the wall is flat.
This approach has advantages beyond dealing with hard gotelé. It allows the contractor to correct waves and patches in the wall at the same time and gives a uniform surface over old repairs. The materials, the number of passes and the waiting times between them depend on the wall and the products used, which is why we do not give a fixed recipe here. Our wall skimming page explains the service in more detail, and our gotelé removal page describes how we choose the method for each room.
How are cracks, corners and edges dealt with?
Once the texture is gone or covered, the wall is examined closely. Cracks are opened slightly and filled so the repair holds rather than reappearing. Damaged external corners are straightened and, where necessary, protected with a corner bead embedded in the finish. Old wall plugs, holes and redundant fixings are removed and filled.
The edges against door frames, skirting, window reveals and ceilings receive particular attention, because this is where an untidy job shows first. The junction between wall and ceiling should be a straight, crisp line. If the ceiling is being treated as well, it is usually done before the walls so that any splashes land on surfaces not yet finished.
How is the final surface checked?
After sanding, which should be done with dust extraction rather than by hand in a closed room, the wall is checked with a strong lamp held close to the surface so that the light grazes across it. This raking light shows ridges, hollows and sanding marks that are invisible under normal lighting but would become obvious once the wall is painted and the afternoon sun hits it.
Defects are corrected and checked again. Only then is the wall primed, which seals the surface and evens out absorption, and painted. It is worth asking any contractor how they check the walls before painting; the answer tells you a great deal about the finish you will get.
What should you ask before hiring someone?
Ask whether they will test the texture before confirming the method, how they will protect your floors and furniture, how they control dust, whether repairs, priming and painting are included, and how the walls are checked before painting. Ask for a quote that lists each room and states the method. Our article comparing doing it yourself or hiring a professional explains why this job is harder than it looks. Whether your town hall expects any notification for the scope of work is checked case by case; in Andalusia the LISTA planning law provides a declaración responsable for minor works without a project (applicability to your job: to be verified with the town hall).
